The Glasgow Wildcats played with unbeatable determination to claim their first Netball Super League (NSL) win of the season against Team Northumbria.

In the final quarter the visitor’s attack was unable to cause any threat to the home side as they stretched their lead into double figures.

“I’m absolutely delighted and really proud of how the players performed for the four quarters.” Wildcats captain Lesley MacDonald said.

“We made sure that we came out firing from the beginning to make sure they were under pressure.” She added.

The Glasgow side initially trailed their opposition but their fierce fighting spirit edged them into the lead. Team Northumbria’s challenges to the reverse the score-line in the first and second quarters were squashed by the Wildcats gritty performance.

The English side managed to level the scores to 19-19 in the second quarter but the response from the Wildcats was defiant.  The Glasgow team became more aggressive and vocal to dominate the game and retain their lead.

The Wildcats led by only 4 points (26-22) at half-time and coach, Denise Holland advised them to work hard and believe in their abilities to beat the visitors.

The words were obviously taken on board as the home side returned to the court to double their lead in the third quarter to 40-32 and by the fourth, Team Northumbria were a shadow of the team that began the match.

“We made them make a lot of errors and we ensured that we capitalised on those errors.” MacDonald said.

Team Northumbria’s coach, Barbara Brown commented, “I think the opposition were totally up for the game today, they did really well and they contested very well.  I just don’t think we took that extra step today.”

Holland said, “We now need to get a lot more belief in ourselves and say ‘we can actually do this’.  I think the girls will take that from this game and move on really strongly.”

The win is motivation for the rest of the Wildcats season.  Goal keeper, Hayley Mulheron said, “I think we believed we could win this game and that was what helped us put points on the board.  Hopefully we can take that into next week’s game for win number two.”
