Glasgow Wildcats: Scotland's Superleague Team

Coach's Corner

The start of the Superleague season in the month of December this year could not have come at a better time; we are stronger, faster and more powerful than ever before, and we are not just saying that! Each athlete up for both Scotland and Glasgow Wildcats selections this year were given the support they needed by either the NGB S & C Coach Andy Thomson or the Institute of Sport S & C Coaches, Tim Sylvester (West) and Neil Crosby (East) to ensure that they are REALLY ready to take the court against the toughest of opposition during Superleague 2009/10.

We would like to extend our thanks not only to these but to everyone who has contributed behind the scenes to ensure that our athletes are ready to compete both domestically in the UK as well as on the International Arena.

It is starting to get tough, selections are now not just a formality, they are conducted with amazing scrutiny. This year we know that the demands on the athletes have and will continue to increase so we have deliberately considered those who demonstrate the following qualities; Self-Determined, Honest, Focussed, Athletic, Skilful, Mentally and Emotional Strong, Totally Reliable, Positive Mental Attitude and above all a Team Player. We are proud of the Glasgow Wildcats this year, every single one of them deserves to be there and we know that they will continue to fight hard throughout the season to keep their position - it's a tough competitive environment but one which everyone respects.

Our preparations in terms of match play take us to Singapore where as the Scotland National squad we will compete in the 6 Nations Cup 6-12th December. The other countries competing include Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Tanzania and Northern Ireland. We will train and play hard each and every day of our 10 day tour against a variety of styles to ensure that we are best prepared on our return for our first Glasgow Wildcats Superleague match away to Leeds Carnegie on Saturday 19th December.

So what are the targets of the Glasgow Wildcats for 09/10? Of course to improve our overall placing at the end of the season but this year we need much more than to simply ‘hold our own'. We are determined to show our supporters just how hard we have been working; we will win more quarters, shoot and convert more goals, capitalize on our own possession, and ball by ball break down our opposition's game. It is extremely exciting, with the experience of a year under our belts, the Glasgow Wildcats are confident and raring to go!
