Team Northumbria defeated Glasgow Wildcats tonight in Newcastle 55-45.
Glasgow Wildcats cast a challenge for Team Northumbria who certainly did not have an easy win tonight. Team Northumbria were only two goals ahead at the first break, 12-10 and had to chip away at a win.
At half time Team Northumbria were ahead by 7 goals, 29-22. Glasgow Wildcats’ best quarter was the third where they put on a strong defensive effort and took advantage of Team Northumbria blunders in attack, making a comeback to be within 4 goals of the lead by 3-quarter time. Team Northumbria showed their experience where they were able to pull away from an enthusiastic Glasgow Wildcat outfit. Full time score 55-45.
Team Northumbria Coach Denise Egan said after the match: ‘A shaky start to the season after the break but a win is a win, we must perform much better than we do on a more consistent basis. MacDonald shot well and her experience showed on court and our defense must get stronger on their ability to challenge. However we had patches of fantastic play where we played to good principles.’
Carla Dziwoki, Northumbria Captain said ‘we will take the points and we did play some good netball with a short game proving successful. We have a lot of work to do and personal goals still to achieve but we are tight and cohesive as a group and have determination to be better, so watch this space!’
Denise Holland, Glasgow Wildcats Coach said ‘I’m really impressed with the Wildcats performance today closing down to just 10 goals and we played intelligent and assertive netball proving that the wildcats have got what it takes.’
