“Glasgow Wildcats Fans Absolutely  Awesome” says Greenway

The Glasgow Wildcats once again proved their resilience as they fought continuously in their clash against this season’s only unbeaten Super League team, Surrey Storm.

Coach for the home side, Denise Holland was pleased with the team’s efforts, “I think we played really tough netball for 60 minutes, we didn’t give up.”

The Wildcats made a cautious start to the match.  Both shooters MacDonald and Collins missed a couple of early chances and Surrey took control of the first quarter through swift and accurate play.

Wildcats captain, Lesley MacDonald said, “We were a bit slow out of the blocks and we took a wee while to adapt to their style of play.”  She added, “We were certainly realistic about what the outcome was going to be and we set our targets accordingly so we’re pretty pleased with what we achieved.”

The home side clearly stepped-up their game from this point onwards.  They gained greater possession and influence in the match and were able to reduce Storm’s goal difference in the second quarter.

Surrey Storm’s player/coach, Tamsin Greenway commented, “We were still putting the goals on there and there’s obviously things we can work on in both attack and defence but overall we’ve got to be happy with hitting almost 70.”

After a fairly flat performance in the third, perhaps due to the furious pace of the match, the players dismissed any sense of exhaustion in the final quarter and delivered the highest scoring 15 minutes for both sides in an exciting and well-fought contest.

The Wildcats were aggressive when in attack; Gail Higgins (WA) played an integral role in many attacking sequences along with captain Lesley MacDonald.  Higgins said, “We’ve worked hard in training and I think a lot of combinations are working well on court.”

Holland praised the work of the Wildcats, “These girls are really quite courageous and their target was to play for 60 minutes no matter what combination they were on with and no matter what style.”

While the vibrant spirit of the Glasgow support did not go unnoticed by visiting player Greenway, “The crowd was absolutely awesome it was so loud in there at times tonight … it’s nice to come to a different venue and they always put up tough opposition.”
