Glasgow Wildcats: Scotland's Superleague Team

SUPERLEAGUE NETBALL IS COMING TO GLASGOW

1 April 2008

The cream of Scottish Netball will be playing in the top flight of the sport from next season. Glasgow has been awarded a franchise for the hugely popular Co-operative Netball Superleague.

The Superleague is already the leading domestic competition in England with seven sides from England’s regions and an invitational side from Wales battling it out in front of thousands of fans at the games and on Sky Sports.

The Glasgow team has yet to be named but will operate on a similar basis to the current Welsh team, the Celtic Dragons, and will feature many of the elite players in Scotland at full international and under 21level.

Almost £200,000 pounds will be invested by Glasgow City Council over the next three years in the Superleague programme in the lead up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games to help ensure there is a sporting legacy for the city.

Councillor Archie Graham, the Council’s Commonwealth Games Spokesman said “I’m delighted Scotland’s first Netball Superleague Franchise is coming to Glasgow. The investment and the exposure Scottish players will get on television should help increase participation and interest as we head towards the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Watching the sport grow in Scotland in the coming years will also provide a fantastic legacy beyond the games”.

9 of the 12 players in last year’s Scottish Squad for the World Championships were either Glasgow based or played for Glasgow Clubs. Regular competition at a higher level should also help Scotland’s chances of qualifying for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Brian McKelvie, the chair of Netball Scotland said “The Co-operative Netball Superleague will provide our players with a sterner challenge facing English and overseas players on a week to week basis, and this exposure to different playing styles and more experienced internationals can only benefit future Scottish teams as we build towards 2014. We are delighted to be included in the league and look forward to our first game with relish.”
